The inmate who died Monday at the Natrona County Detention Center had a history of health problems in prison.

Salvatore Lucido, 46, died of a heart attack he suffered while in jail, according to an autopsy performed in Loveland, Colo., Natrona County Coroner James Thorpen said Thursday.

Lucido had a history of heart problems, Thorpen said. He had diabetes mellitus, Thorpen said, which was the underlying cause of his death. He had also suffered a severe heart attack that left scars prior to his most recent heart attack.

Lucido had been in and out of Wyoming jails for much of the decade. During one stint at the Wyoming State Penitentiary, he had to have his lower right leg amputated, he argued in a lawsuit, because prison staff reacted too slowly to sores he developed on his foot. The delay in treatment stemmed from a desire by officials to have him reach his release date -- April 23, 2003 -- before they had to provide him with costly health care, he said in a Star-Tribune interview at the time.

The State of Wyoming settled out of court, paying Lucido $50,000.

Lucido was booked into the detention center in June on several drug possession charges and driving under suspension and without insurance charges.
