JACKSON (AP) -- The National Park Service needs to investigate whether a subspecies of bison might still roam Yellowstone National Park, a former park ranger said.

Bob Jackson, a critic of the Park Service and former Yellowstone ranger, says mountain bison lived on the high-elevation Mirror Plateau south of Lamar Valley for thousands of years before the plains bison were reintroduced to the park.

Though the bison have likely interbred, he said, the Mirror Plateau bison likely retained much of their genetic heritage and their "culture," which has enabled them to survive for thousands of years without leaving the park.

"This is an animal that doesn't go outside of Yellowstone because they are so wary," Jackson said of the mountain bison.

The mountain herd numbers roughly 300 animals and spends winters in Yellowstone, he said.

But outfitter camps set up in and around the area where the bison roam could be disturbing the herd, he said.

Jackson, who is a private bison rancher, said Yellowstone biologists need to step up their research on the Mirror Plateau to ensure the mountain bison's long-term viability. Further, he said wildlife managers need to give the herd access to more backcountry areas.

Yellowstone spokesman Al Nash said recent reviews of scientific literature suggest that there is no difference between the Mirror Plateau bison and reintroduced bison.

"There was a time when scientists thought there might be two subspecies, the mountain bison and the plains bison," Nash said. "But most scientists really don't see that distinction any more."

Still, Nash said researchers are conducting genetic sampling of the bison on Mirror Plateau.

"And we do have some bison from the different herds or smaller groups that are radio collared," he said. "We are working to gather data on their movement to see if this small group does indeed interact with other groups, especially during the rut, and to see if these animals move outside the park boundaries."

"We don't think there's a separate mountain bison, but there are ongoing questions about how these groups interact," Nash said.

" Bob Jackson is an idiot! He's the same back country ranger that was suspended from his duties for hazing elk back into yellowstone and harassing hunters on the outside of the park boundaries! He needs to left Yellowstone decisions up to the park biologist, and get over the fact he was "laid off" by the park service! "

" Sorry T(horofare) guide but the smoke from all those spent shells must have addled your brain. The "case" had to do with all the salt you guys were using to bait the elk out of the Park. Quite the fair chase hunters you were. And one other thing. I won and came back to assume my duties. The ones that lost were my supervisor (demoted from a gs 11 to a 9, the iadministrative ranger the NPSassigned to my case...had to transfer out, and the public affairs officer had to take early retirement. Plus any negative statements in my official file had to be replaced with a note of my positive performance. Tguide are you one of those I caught poaching? So much bitterness. "

" any more gloating to do bob j. and do not worry i did not get caught poaching i am disabled. all you had was good representation does not mean you were not the problem. I am sure all those records have been sealed as i have seen no report of demotions, transfers or retirements but i am sure you will turn all that over to the media for a non biased report of your allegations. As far as harrassment you would not be the first governmental employee to harass the regular citizen. I do believe abuse of authority under color of law would pretain to you also. "

" Sorry Bob, I don't poach! Never have, and never intend to start! But, even if I was one, YOU certainly don't have the SKILLS to catch me! Why aren't you there any more Bob, if there wasn't pressure to "retire"? We miss you! "

" T(horofare heel grinder), Sorry to burst your bubble again, but when a fed officer turns 57 they can no longer legally shoot bad guys. Thus after I "won" I had that last year. I wasn't one to continue on and "volunteer" like so many others who can't get away from playing "the role" ...another tidbit pertaining to all those camp bosses and outfitters most guides worshipped. I only had one guy in all those years who didn't cry when the gig was up and there were no more alibis to use to get out of admitting to poaching. I'd have to wipe the tears off the confession note pad after it was all over. This ONE outfitter actually didn't know the difference of right from wrong. Not so tough guys after all? And why "heel grinders"? This is because all those wannabe bow leggers took a hand grinder to the outside edge of the heel of their packers. "
