The man who killed himself at the end of Friday's police chase tried to run down an officer beforehand, Casper police said Monday.

The chase ended when the man stopped in an Evansville intersection and came out of the truck with a shotgun under his chin, Lt. Chris Walsh said.

"As the officers were ordering him to drop the weapon, the driver of the truck fired the weapon and took his own life," Walsh said.

The incident is being investigated by the Wyoming Division of Criminal Investigation because three different local law enforcement agencies were involved. Authorities have not released the man's name.

Monday morning, Walsh offered new details about the events leading up to the suicide:

Just after 3 p.m. Friday, Casper police received reports that a man on the south end of 26th Street was trying to break into a car with a woman inside. Witnesses said he had what appeared to be a hammer in his hand.

One caller said the man managed to get in, but the woman got out and ran down the street. She was chased by the man, who was by then driving a white Dodge truck.

When an officer arrived, he found the woman near the Casper Municipal Golf Course. As he started to investigate, the man in the truck tried to run him down.

"The officer managed to jump out of the way of the truck before it could strike him," Walsh said.

After the man's description was broadcast over the police radio, another officer spotted the pickup in northern Casper. A chase began that eventually led to Interstate 25 and then Evansville and included Evansville police officers and Natrona County Sheriff's deputies.

The man, who was the only person in the pickup, stopped at the intersection of First and Williams streets. He got out of the car with the shotgun and did not respond to officers' orders to put down the gun.

From the time the truck stopped, Walsh estimated it took less than a minute for the man to shoot himself. The chase itself lasted less than 10 minutes.

The man stopped on his own and officers did not deploy spike strips or barricades during the chase, police said. His ties to the Evansville neighborhood remain under investigation.

Walsh declined to comment on the relationship between the man and the woman, but he did say the officers who responded were initially investigating an Family Violence Protection Act incident. Such incidents are associated with domestic or family violence.

" gl, what if it was your daughter he was chasing, you would want the police to do whatever they could to catch him right. Obviously the guy couldn't control himself. Take your ignorant comments somewhere else. "

" It takes so many officers when the man is crazed and ready to kill... you don't take chances with a man like this. He already tried to kil two people that day- why are you so sympathetic towards him when he backed himself into a corner and took his own life? My prayers go out to his family... "

" Sounds like one less woman beater out there to me!!!! At least he killed himself and not that woman. The police take an oath to serve and protect and that's exactly what they were doing so gl get a clue!!!! "

" gl U really need to think twice before u post. The reason for so many officers was it started in one town and ended in another. Why don't you say thank you to the officers that help save lives, and try to keep your simple thinking to yourself. "

" Ok for all of you that think you are big and mighty and have the right to judge my cousin, you better stop and think twice!!!! There is only one judge and that is the good Lord!!! He was NOT out to kill anyone...he simply wanted to talk to his ex-wife....is that SOOOO WRONG? He also was NOT CRAZED OR CRAZY!!!!!! Not a single one of you people know this man or what he was going through, and by the looks of it....you DON'T even care!!! He also was NOT a woman beater!!!! I personally think that you all need to step back and not say another word about someone that you know NOTHING about both personally and intimately!!!! Grow up all of you!!!! "

" First my prayers go out to ALL the familys involved- on both sides. It is true the good lord will be the judge but people still have the right to say thankyou to the law enforcement who stopped this man. I know the facts and no one can say what was going on in that mans mind but you dont attack someone in her car, terrifying the woman when you "just want to talk." (by the way he knew why she wouldn't so why did he wait for her with a gun in his vehicle) and only a crazed and confused person would then try to run over anyone who stood in his way. I am directly invovled with this whole thing and it is sad that a life was lost, thankfully the police did what they could and no one else lost their life (the woman OR the cop he tried to run over.) "

" Your cousin did NOT need a gun to "talk" to his ex wife. Like others have said, thank GOD he did not hurt anyone but himself. Sorry for your loss but man he could have really hurt or killed alot of people. "

" GL put on the uniform and put your life on the line as these officers do each and everyday. I hope you are never in a situation that requires their help! Try to be a little grateful and thank them instead of bad mouthing them for doing their jobs! "

Honesty wrote on Oct 22, 2008 8:06 PM:

" I have to agree with everyone that this person was certainly not acting like a "sane" person. This family member needs to step back, take off the blinders, and really do some soul searching about why he is trying to justify this type of behavior from his cousin. Sane people don't put a loaded shotgun under their chin and pull the trigger- that's as far from sane as you can get. "

" To GL! You are a complete idiot. Must people always blame the police for everything? This gut took his own life, and if the police department scared him, too bad. Imagine what that woman must have felt. Also, did u not just read about the last idiot that killed his girlfriend that he sl called just wanted to talk to? To Deceased Family member, I am sorry for your loss, but only someone who has issues takes a hammer with them to "talk" to another human being! No one is passing judgement on him, but he made the choice to do what he did. I am glad that he took his own life instead of getting the opportunity to kill the police officer that he tried to run over as well as the female victim. His wife is called EX for a reason! Sounds like a woman beater to me if he needed a hammer to "talk". Just imagine what would have happened if he got a hold of this woman and she was not able to escape. He had the gun with him for a reason. Of I forgot he just wanted to "TALK". "

" as a former deputy sherriff, i have been in a situation like this before and believe me, it is something you dont want to happen, but it did. on the personal side i knew this man for over 25yrs he was like my brother-n-law and during that time i never new him of hitting his wife or ex-wife. he was very humble and would do anything for you in a minute, as it turned out, he had issues that he was dealing with far more than i could imagine. as for his ex, im very glad that she is ok, i would not want anyone to go through something like that. and for the police officers, they did there job, they put there lives on the line everyday as i did. i wished this could have turned out different "
